This Archimede Class partial double-hull design was laid down in 1931 and finished in 1934-1935 was originally called either the Archimede or Torricello depending on sources. In 1936 Italy sided with the Nationals in Spain's civil war and secretly used this submarine and others to attack Spanish Republican crafts, allies and neutrals.
In 1937 the ship was transferred to Spanish Nationals after training Spanish officers and sailors. The name was changed to General Mola after Emilio Mola Vidal. The first outing with the Spanish flag was made May 13, 1937, which together with the "General Sanjurjo", sailed toward the Strait of Sicily where they performed scouting missions in Spartivento channel and on their return, they managed to sink the transport City Barcelona, carrying volunteers of the International Brigades.
